About metallium jewellery

Some stories are written in books.

Others are etched into metal.

Metallium Jewellery is more than just a business—it’s a reflection of my passion, dedication, and craftsmanship. Every piece is designed and handcrafted by me, Karen, using techniques honed over more than 20 years in the trade, from my workshop in Dundee, Scotland.

From delicate stone settings to bespoke commissions, I specialize in jewellery that carries meaning. My work is about more than aesthetics—it’s about sentiment and craftsmanship coming together. Whether it’s a lock securing a memory, a key unlocking a future, or a heart carrying the weight of emotion, each design tells a tale that is uniquely yours.

 A Journey Forged in Metal

My journey started at in 1998 at  Cardonald collage, Glasgow studying Jewellery & silversmithing for 3 years, leading to years of experience at the bench in Scotland, Canada, and Holland, as well as a degree in Jewellery & Metal Design from Duncan of Jordonstone Art School Dundee and A Masters in Technical Art History from Glasgow University.

My self-employed chapter began in 2014 under Karen Smith Jewellery & Metal Design.  I rebranded to Metallium Jewellery in 2021—refining my vision for high-quality, meticulously crafted designs.

The Art of Handmade

Metallium Jewellery is  a one-woman business. As a single mum, I juggle family life while running my jewellery studio solo—meaning every order, every consultation, and every detail is handled by me alone. Handmade takes time, but that’s what makes each piece special. There is no mass production here, just my hands, my skill, and my commitment to creating heirlooms of the future.

Sharing the Craft

Alongside my work as a jeweller, I also teach and mentor, sharing my passion for craftsmanship with aspiring makers both in one to one and group settings and including for the Jeweller’s Academy online jewellery diploma programmes.

What Makes Metallium Unique?

Fiona Boyle

I’ve attended 4 of Karen’s courses as well as small workshops. She is a fantastic teacher, makes sure you master the basic skills needed to create simple (or more ambitious) jewellery designs. She is patient and helps constantly during the time her students are with her. Her experience of jewellery design and love of creating pieces herself makes her a very encouraging, supportive

the studio

Karen's studio is based at 4–6 Staffa Place, Dundee, DD2 3SX. If you'd prefer to discuss your commission in person, you're very welcome to visit, just please note that all studio visits are strictly by appointment only.
